Abstract

Here we describe that private breeders of tortoises in Germany and in the European Union are facing problems. Laws privilege import and trade of wild caught and farmed / ranched specimens. This led to problem that captive bred animals are higher priced than wild caught. For that reason many breeders decided to stop breeding. The value of breeding instead of importing is highlighted as well as the valuable information that are collected by hobbyists when they are interested in breeding their animals. Breeders are encouraged to re-start breeding activities and to cooperate with the pet trade as measurement of animal welfare and species preservation.
