Abstract
We describe an infestation with larvae of the larder beetle,
Dermestes lardarius, in hibernating black-breasted leave turtles
Geoemyda spengleri which resulted in topical lesions of the soft parts of the turtle skin. In one case, this resulted in a deeply
penetrating subcutaneous wound of the proximal hind limb from the knee along the femur, including severe loss of muscle tissue. The main
focus of this article addresses initial and continued treatment of this deep lesion over a period of 9 months. In the beginning this wound
was cleaned form pus treated with Flammazine ointment (Silver Sulfadiazine) before being sutured and sealed by a skin adhesive to reduce
re-infection caused by the normal activity of the turtle. Cleaning and suturing of the skin had to be repeated on a regular basis during the
first months until the lesion had closed completely. In addition, we refer to an adequate quarantine on the basis of heat sterilized
Sphagnum moss and the associated behaviour of the turtle. Furthermore we refer to an observation with an adult female
Geoemyda
spengleri which had been treated for topical skin lesions and which produced two clutches of fertile eggs in 2009 after the last mating
had occurred in March 2008, indicating that this species is capable of storing sperm or possibly fertilized oocytes. This latter observation
calls for a more detailed investigation of the mechanisms of sperm storing in turtles and tortoises as discussed briefly.
