Abstract
Podocnemis expansa is the largest Chelonia living at the South American continent. In this article I provide a detailed description
of the habit and the species' natural history highlighting its status in Venezuela where the species is dramatically threatened. Regarding
its protection, I discuss the international classification of IUCN (LR/cd) and CITES (II) and compare it with the results of Venezuelan
research that index it as critically endangered (CR). To stop this tendency, the Venezuelan government launched a program including
different measurements including protecting the Arrau turtle by law, declaring wildlife refuges, and head-starting efforts.
